The automobile has always sought to reconcile two seemingly contradictory requirements: manoeuvrability at low speeds and stability at high speeds. This gives the vehicle greater stability, trajectory precision and driving comfort, particularly when overtaking or taking fast corners.

Initially reserved for sports and high-end models, this innovation quickly became a sought-after feature. It appealed to manufacturers seeking to offer a safer and more enjoyable driving experience, while highlighting the technological sophistication of their vehicles. In the years that followed, electronics were used to perfect the system: sensors, computers and actuators made the adjustments more precise, more responsive and completely transparent to the driver.

Today, rear-wheel steering is no longer the preserve of sports coupés and large luxury saloons. It is also fitted to a variety of models, such as the Renault Mégane E-Tech and the Porsche Taycan, proving that this technology has found its place in family-friendly, electric and innovative vehicles. It perfectly illustrates how an idea born more than forty years ago has evolved and become more widespread thanks to advances in electronics.

By offering more precise, comfortable and safer driving, rear-wheel steering is now helping to redefine the standards of mobility. They remind us that beyond the major visible revolutions, it is sometimes subtle adjustments – a few extra degrees of steering – that profoundly transform the driving experience and bring the car even closer to the ideal of control and safety that has been sought since its inception.
