(R)EVOLUTION - Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence – The driving force behind autonomous vehicles
Long confined to the realm of science fiction, artificial intelligence (AI) is now emerging as one of the most powerful drivers of transformation in the automotive industry. More than just a tool, it is becoming an invisible partner, capable of processing millions of pieces of data in an instant to make driving safer, smoother and smarter.
AI plays a central role in the field of autonomous vehicles. It combines different disciplines – image processing, machine learning, neural networks – to analyse the road environment in real time. Cameras, radars and lidars transmit a huge amount of information that AI instantly synthesises: recognising a pedestrian about to cross the road, detecting a cyclist emerging from a blind spot, anticipating the braking of the vehicle in front. Thanks to these perception and prediction capabilities, the car no longer just reacts, it learns to anticipate.
But the contribution of AI is not limited to driving. It is also revolutionising the field of car maintenance with predictive maintenance. By analysing data from on-board sensors, it can predict the wear and tear of a part, identify a fault before it causes a breakdown, or optimise the repair schedule. This proactive approach reduces costs, limits downtime and improves reliability, particularly for commercial vehicle fleets.
More broadly, AI is at the heart of tomorrow’s mobility. It facilitates traffic management, optimises journeys in real time, and helps reduce energy consumption and pollutant emissions. In the smart cities of tomorrow, connected vehicles will be able to communicate with each other and with infrastructure to improve traffic flow and enhance collective safety.
Beyond technology, AI embodies a new philosophy of mobility: making transport not only more efficient, but also more human, by freeing drivers from certain constraints and putting safety first.
From the road to the workshop, from individuals to fleets, artificial intelligence is redefining every aspect of the automobile. It reminds us that the mobility of tomorrow will not be limited to cleaner engines or connected vehicles, but will be based on shared intelligence, capable of learning, adapting and guiding drivers towards a safer and more sustainable future.
